Paul Rosolie: The Girl and the Tiger

Doors open 30 minutes before the start of the event.

Being eaten or trampled to death aren’t the usual risks that come with writing a novel. But during the 10 years he spent researching in India, author Paul Rosolie faced both on a number of occasions. In his debut novel that’s already being hailed a “21st Century Jungle Book,” Rosolie explores the vibrant Indian landscape through the lens of Isha, an intrepid 13-year-old girl. But in the 125 years since The Jungle Book was written, much has changed. The Girl and the Tiger, based on true events, takes place in a different India from Rudyard Kipling’s. In a time when we have lost more than 50 percent of the world’s wildlife in the last century, creatures like tigers and elephants are vanishing. More than 100,000 tigers roamed the earth in 1900. Today, there are fewer than 3,000. Elephants have seen a similarly devastating decline. The Indian jungle, and much of the living environment on this planet, is in a state of emergency. The Girl and the Tiger, the result of 10 years of field study, confronts the realities of the Anthropocene. Paul Rosolie has lived and worked in the stunning jungles of South India, studying the migration of tigers and elephants and the lives of tribal people who still call the forests home. Sharing real-life encounters and exclusive photographic and video reporting, Rosolie will discuss the threats facing tigers and elephants, and the incredible events that inspired his new novel The Girl and the Tiger.
