People Like Us: The Need for Greater Diversity in Government

12:00 p.m. – Check-in, light lunch served
12:30 p.m. – Program
1:30 p.m. – Book signing

The demographics of the United States are rapidly changing. Yet most of America’s political leadership continues to fit a familiar mold: white, wealthy, Christian, and male.

For decades, political, systemic, and cultural roadblocks have prevented government from reflecting the nation’s growing diversity. But those roadblocks are beginning to crumble as political candidates from different backgrounds run for office in greater numbers than ever before.

In her new book, People Like Us, political scientist Dr. Sayu Bhojwani tells of Americans from all walks of life who are challenging the status quo, winning elections in the face of stark odds, and carving a path for others to follow. In this Brennan Center public conversation, she will share their stories, examine challenges in their quest for public office, and discuss the need for greater diversity in American government.

Dr. Sayu Bhojwani, Founder and President, New American Leaders
