Periods, According to Pop Culture

Periods are having a major pop culture moment — and that’s a good thing. For most of us, our first exposure to menstruation was through tampon and pad commercials, which taught us that period blood is blue and getting your period means you will magically be able to ride a horse or hike up a mountain. Except none of that is accurate. Thankfully, we’ve come a long way from the belts and clips described in Judy Blume’s 1970 classic Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. More recently, through episodes of Roseanne, The Golden Girls, Big Mouth, GLOW and Curb Your Enthusiasm, to movies like 20th Century Women, to Meghan Markle’s royal bio, menstruation is finally coming out of the shadows. Join Dr. Elizabeth Yuko for an inside look into periods in pop culture, based on her contribution to the book PERIOD: 12 Voices Tell the Bloody Truth.
