Person Place Thing Series: 500 Women Scientists

Microbiologist Davida S. Smyth is Randy Cohen’s guest as part of the Person Place Thing, 500 Women Scientists Series.

Dr. Smyth conducts research with her undergraduate team in the area of comparative microbial genomics and evolution, studying Staphylococcus aureus from humans and animals and the role of the built environment and anthropogenic activity in driving antibiotic resistance, a major global health threat. She also engages in pedagogical research on improving civic and scientific literacy in biology and integrating authentic research into the curriculum to improve student engagement and success in science. She also is passionate about future faculty. She guides and mentors junior faculty and adjuncts to successfully apply for academic positions in teaching and beyond.

Person Place Thing is an interview show hosted by Randy Cohen, original NY Times Ethicist columnist, based on the idea that people are particularly engaging when they speak, not directly about themselves, but about something they care about. His guests talk about one person, one place, and one thing that are important to them. This event, the final of three conversations with women scientists at KGB Bar’s Red Room and also features live music by Irish Music Chanteuse Emily Cavanagh. It will be recorded for broadcast on Northeast Public Radio.
