Person Place Thing with Randy Cohen and Susan Cheever

Person Place Thing is an interview show based on this idea: people are particularly engaging when they speak not directly about themselves but about something they care about. Guests talk about one person, one place, and one thing that are important to them. The result? Surprising stories from great talkers. Learn more at personplacething.org.

In this live podcast recording, Person Place Thing host Randy Cohen chats with bestselling author and lifelong Library member Susan Cheever, with music by guitarist Tomas Rodriguez.

Randy Cohen’s first professional work was writing humor pieces, essays and stories for newspapers and magazines (the New Yorker, Harpers, the Atlantic, Young Love Comics). His first television work was writing for Late Night with David Letterman, for which he won three Emmy awards. His fourth Emmy was for his work on Michael Moore’s TV Nation. He received a fifth Emmy as a result of a clerical error, and he kept it. For twelve years he wrote “The Ethicist,” a weekly column for the the New York Times Magazine. His most recent book (an optimistic formulation) is Be Good: How to Navigate the Ethics of Everything.

Susan Cheever is the author of over fifteen works of fiction and nonfiction including E.E. Cummings: A Life; American Bloomsbury: The Lives of Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau in Concord Massachusetts from 1840 to 1868; and Drinking in America: Our Secret History. She has been a columnist and book reviewer for Newsday, the New Yorker, and the New York Times, among others. Her many honors include the Boston Globe’s Winship Medal, a Pulitzer Prize shared with her Newsday team, a Guggenheim fellowship, and a nomination from the National Book Critic’s Circle. The New York Public Library has named her a Literary Lion.
