The Philippine Madrigal Singers Presented by SMSS Concerts

The Philippine Madrigal Singers, UNESCO Artists for Peace and two-time winners of the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing, return to Sacred Music in a Sacred Space with a concert celebrating Filipino choral artistry.

The virtuosic 22-member group opens the 2017-18 season of Sacred Music in a Sacred Space on Thursday, October 6 at 8 pm at the visually arresting historic Church of St. Ignatius Loyola (980 Park Avenue at 84^th Street). Tickets are $35 – $85; purchase at smssconcerts.org or call 212-288-2520.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers, or “The Madz,” is one of the most awarded choral groups in the world, having consistently won all top prizes in major choral competitions. They hold the distinction of being the first choir in the world to win the prestigious European Grand Prix for Choral Singing twice, in 1997 and 2007. Under the direction of Mark Anthony Carpio, the decorated choir visits St. Ignatius just before it competes in the renowned European Grand Prix in November 2017, where it aspires to an unprecedented third win in the competition.

The group’s virtuosity across a vast range of repertoire, its continuing promotion of Filipino choral works, and the deep emotional impact of their performances have won the hearts of its audiences across the globe. They sing unconducted in a distinctive seated semi-circle and have established their reputation as a pioneering force in choral music and an inspirational role model for other choirs.

The Madz’s program on October 6 heavily features the excellence of Filipino choral music in original works and arrangements by Filipino composers Ily Matthew Maniano, Nilo Alcala II, Fr. Carlo Magno Marcelo, Fr. Arnold Zamora and others, alongside pieces by Peter Cornelius, Jake Runestad, K. Scott Warren and others.
