Philistines at Ashkelon

The vivid stories of Samson and Delilah and David and Goliath have made the Philistines some of history’s most reviled villains. During the last two hundred years, archaeologists, explorers, geneticists, and historians worked to understand the real Philistines, the ancient people behind the infamous legends.

Professor Daniel Master of Wheaton College visits the National Arts Club to discuss their origins in Crete as understood through the Leon Levy Expedition, a 35 year research project at the port of Ashkelon. Learn how archaeologists have traced Philistine history from its beginnings in the 12th century B.C.E. to its fiery demise at the hand of the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar.
