Celebrated Russian pianist and recording artist Mikhail Rudy presents the New York premiere of a multimedia performance of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition (1874), with animated projections developed from original Vasily Kandinsky drawings. Rudy researched the archives of the Centre Pompidou in Paris after he learned that Kandinsky, while teaching at the Bauhaus, produced a series of drawings for a staged performance of Pictures at an Exhibition in Dessau on April 4, 1928. The complete set of original watercolor drawings was recently exhibited by the Centre Pompidou, together with the animated images, as part of the comprehensive exhibition Dance Through Life (2011–12). The Guggenheim performances are followed by a moderated conversation with Rudy about his discovery and the origin of the project.
