Joel Smith, the Morgan’s Richard L. Menschel Curator, talks with artist Sheila Sporer about Ray Johnson (1927-1995)–“New York’s most famous unknown artist,” founder of the New York Correspondence School, and subject of the 2021 Morgan exhibition PLEASE SEND TO REAL LIFE: Ray Johnson Photographs. The exhibition will bring to light a large, unique body of photographs Johnson made in his final three years–a period when much of his art took the form of intimate creative dialogues and exchanges within his immediate circle.
