After a distinguished career as a historian, Nell Painter—the Edwards Professor Emerita of American History at Princeton—became a visual artist. “Using found images and digital manipulation,” Painter writes, “I reconfigure the past and revision myself through self-portraits. After a life of historical truth and political engagement with American society, my artwork represents freedom.” Painter joins Valerie Paley, chief historian and director of New-York Historical’s Center for Women’s History, for a conversation about her own practice and the intersection of art and history.
