Please join us for a panel discussion concerning Janet Neary’s Fugitive Testimony: On the Visual Logic of Slave Narratives (Fordham University Press, 2016). Featuring presentations by Sarah Blackwood, Kristin Moriah, Ivy Wilson, and Autumn Womack, the panel will consider how Neary’s book examines the connections between the visual and performative aspects of nineteenth century African American slave narratives and the praxis of contemporary African American visual artists in representing the legacies of enslavement. Co-sponsored by the Graduate Center’s Sawyer Seminar in “Cultures and Histories of Freedom: Ideology, Slavery, and Creolization, 1500-1900” this event is also part of the English Program’s New Approaches to African American and African Diaspora Studies Speakers Series.
