Reproductive Justice in America

Panelists will discuss the history of women’s reproductive health care from an intersectional perspective.

Elix, a woman’s health brand rooted in the ancient power of Traditional Chinese Medicine, will host a virtual conversation exploring the history of women’s reproductive health care, the pivotal role that Black bodies have played in modern gynecology, as well as the massive care gap that persists today.

Acclaimed historian and professor Deirdre Cooper Owens (author of Medical Bondage: Race, Gender, and the Origins of American Gynecology), Linda Goler Blount, President & CEO of Black Women’s Health Imperative, and Bea Dixon, Founder of The Honey Pot, will join Elix founder and CEO Lulu Ge on Tuesday, July 14 from 5:00pm – 5:45pm EST.

This intersectional conversation will explore nuanced questions, like:

  • Would modern gynecology have developed as it did without the largely uncredited contributions of Black women?
  • Who constructed the gynecological system in the United States, and what were their goals?
  • What institutional systems persist that result in Black women being underserved when it comes to child birth, pelvic pain, fibroids, and endometriosis?
  • What are the actionable steps real women can take to demand change?

The goal is to open a rich dialogue about reproductive health and empower listeners to develop a deeper understanding of systemic racism within the women’s health care system. Please find further information below:

Guests will receive a private Zoom link the day before the event (Monday, July 13), along with instructions for joining the “room,” how to participate in the Q&A, and more!

100% of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Black Women’s Health Imperative.

About Black Women’s Health Imperative

Since 1983, Black Women’s Health Imperative has been the only national organization dedicated solely to improving the health and wellness of our nation’s 21 million Black women and girls –physically, emotionally and financially. Through investments in evidence-based strategies, the organization delivers bold new programs and advocates health-promoting policies.

About Elix

Founded by Lulu Ge, Elix is a clinically-backed, women’s health company rooted in the ancient power of traditional Chinese medicine.

Elix is the first brand to personalize scientifically-proven Chinese herbal remedies through modern technology, democratizing access to holistic healing methods that have proven effective for over 2,500 years. Addressing the root of hormonal symptoms by meeting overlooked needs in women’s health, Elix is the antidote to band-aid solutions and an outdated, “one-size-fits-all” approach.

Elix’s flagship Cycle Balance—a tincture of potent, medicinal herbs— is tailored to heal menstrual symptoms over time (and for good) by treating the hormonal imbalances and inflammation that cause them. Elix personalizes each Cycle Balance blend through pattern diagnosis, using a proprietary online assessment. To get started, women and people who menstruate answer 50-60 questions about their cycles and overall health to discover the cause of their monthly symptoms, and which powerful, healing botanicals in their formula are recommended to best treat them. Armed with new knowledge and a holistic solution, 93% of women taking Cycle Balance have reported improved symptoms in the first month alone, with efficacy increasing over time. Along with resolved cycle-related symptoms, Cycle Balance users report feeling better every day of the month, with a decrease in recurring interferences like headaches, fatigue, gastrointestinal issues and skin concerns.

Cycle-related symptoms continue to affect up to 90% of women in the US, leading to over a billion hours of lost productivity annually; yet in today’s health care system, only 4% of research and development addresses women’s health issues. Modern people who menstruate face the same options – which are often coupled with harmful side effects – that their grandmothers did to treat life-disrupting menstrual interferences.

Elix is on a mission to give women’s health the attention it deserves, harnessing ancient wisdom for the future of menstrual wellness.
