Rethinking China – Surveying the Post-Party Congress Investment Landscape: Is the Boom Over or About to Restart?

A conversation with China expert and economist Dan Rosen

What does the 19th Communist Party Congress portend for China’s economic and political directions? Many reforms important to long-term growth have been deferred until after this key October political meeting, while some backward steps have been taken the past year—particularly controls of outbound investment—in the name of fostering stability. In recent years Chinese overseas investment has boomed, including $46 billion in U.S. deals just last year. Alarmed by the pace of capital outflow, with foreign exchange reserves falling quickly from more than $4 trillion to less than $3 trillion, Beijing tightened capital controls in early 2017. Deal activity plummeted. Post-Party Congress, will Chinese overseas investments and market economic reforms get back on track? What is the outlook for Chinese investment in the United States?

Daniel Rosen, a leading China expert and economist whose Rhodium Group has produced cutting edge research on Chinese investment in the United States and globally, will discuss the outlook for business and investment following the Party Congress, in conversation with Dorinda Elliott, director of the China Institute’s Center for Business.
