Revise and Extend: Jane Alexander for Arts in America

In October 1997, after four years fighting for federal government support of art in America, Jane Alexander resigned as chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts. During her four-year term, as fierce critics worked to eliminate her agency, Alexander tirelessly championed the NEA’s cause through congressional hearings, television interviews, and appearances in communities across the United States. Twenty years later, the NEA is threatened again. Now untethered by office or protocol, Tony Award winning actress and author Jane Alexander comes to the library to respond again to the enemies of the NEA. For this unconventional and timely interview, each question is composed from exactly quoted statements by Jesse Helms, Dick Armey, Newt Gingrich and other conservative culture warriors of the 1990s.
