RIGHTEOUS: A Play Reading

In August 1942, a secret telegram circulated through the halls of power in Washington and London, a dire warning that Germany planned to exterminate 3.5 to 4 million Jews from Nazi-occupied territories. The warning was summarily dismissed by Western governments. The source of the information in the so-called Riegner telegram, a German industrialist named Eduard Schulte, remained a closely guarded secret for the next 40 years. Jeff Cohen’s new play captures the quest of Schulte’s granddaughter to discover the grandfather she never knew, who was honored in 1988 by Yad Vashem as a “righteous gentile.”
