Book Signing, Performances and Projections

This book perfectly captures the unique personalities of the many artists, musicians, writers, performers, and just plain kooks who made the 80s zeitgeist rock! —Ann Magnuson

Howl! Happening is pleased to present an evening with Robert Carrithers and friends celebrating the publication of City Primeval: New York, Berlin, Prague.  Master of ceremonies Penny Arcade is joined by a host of artists, poets and musicians including: the music and poetry of Puma Perl with Walter Steding (violin), and Joff Wilson (guitar); the inimitable Tish and Snooky; Steve Dalichinsky reading his work from the book; Performer Gaby Bila-Günther aka Lady Gaby from Berlin; musician Mark Steiner from Oslo; Gary Ray reading his work; and a short music video performance by Julius Klein.

City Primeval: New York, Berlin, Prague is an anthology written and curated by New York photographer and Club 57 aficionado Robert Carrithers, and writer and critical theorist Louis Armand. The book documents the zeitgeist of art and culture of the New York, Berlin, and Prague underground scenes from the late 70s to the present: from New York post-punk and No Wave to the fall of the Berlin Wall to the Velvet Revolution and the Prague Renaissance.  Howl! Happening is pleased to host a book release party that brings these stories to life and showcases contributing artists’ work through performance, music, and video.

The book is a constellation of personal documentaries of place and time by key contemporary writers, poets, musicians, designers, filmmakers, photographers, artists, editors, and performers. Key artists offer a unique glimpse into their exceptional universe and moments from their lives, including Lydia Lunch, Iggy Pop, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Penny Arcade, Mark Reeder, David Černý, and others who shaped the spirit of the time.

Times were pretty crazy back then. Bob [Carrithers] used to be a regular in all my clubs and witnessed a lot of the goings on. If you don’t believe what you read, just ask him! —Rudolf Piper, NYC club owner and entrepreneur.
