Robert Indiana in Context

loveFor this roundtable discussion, scholars Joachim Pissarro and Thomas Crow, along with curator Barbara Haskell, will explore the artist Robert Indiana in the context of his contemporaries.

On the occasion of Robert Indiana: Beyond LOVE, this program will address Indiana’s early roots, the proliferation of his signature image LOVE, and his engagement with political and allegorical topics. Despite Indiana’s bold, simple visual vocabulary, his work reveals underlying themes of American identity, racial injustice, and disillusion.

Placing Indiana in the art world alongside contemporaries like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and James Rosenquist, this program will explore the complexity of his astoundingly diverse oeuvre and reevaluate his place in art history.
