Sandy Allen: A Kind Of Mirraculas Paradise W/ Ashley Ford

Originally published in hardcover last winter, A Kind of Mirraculas Paradiseis Sandy Allen’s rendition of the life story of their uncle Bob, who for years was known to Allen only as the “crazy” hermit who sometimes showed up at family vacations, and who had spent time in mental hospitals while growing up in Berkeley in the 60s and 70s. But in 2009, Bob mailed Allen – by then an MFA student in the University of Iowa’s creative nonfiction program – his autobiography. Typewritten in all caps and riddled with errors, the often-incomprehensible manuscript proclaimed to be a “true story” about being “labeled a psychotic paranoid schizophrenic,” and arrived with a plea to help him get his story out into the world.
