‘Saving Radio City Music Hall, NYC’s Great Art Deco Masterpiece’ Webinar

No one was prepared in early 1978 when it was announced that Radio City Music Hall — NYC’s great art deco masterpiece and iconic cultural landmark — would close its doors for good and be demolished by year’s end. But for one of the theater’s top ballet dancers, the idea that the “Showplace of the Nation” would be reduced to rubble wasn’t just devastating, it was sacrilege — something had to be done. This is the incredible true story of how that dancer and a small coalition of colleagues and friends took on one of America’s most powerful families to save one of the country’s most revered landmarks.

Join New York Adventure Club as we uncover the captivating David and Goliath story surrounding Radio City Music Hall in the late 1970s — a battle that pitted a small group from the Radio City Music Hall community against the Rockefeller establishment to save one of the world’s premier theaters from the wrecking ball.

Led by Rosemary Novellino-Mearns — author of Saving Radio City Music Hall: A Dancer’s True Story — this theatrical documentary-style webinar surrounding her fight to save Radio City Music Hall will include:

  • brief history of Radio City Music Hall, from Opening Night in the midst of the Great Depression to shows of the late 1970s
  • digital showcase of the Music Hall’s famous art deco spaces, including the magnificent Grand Foyer and auditorium
  • Stories from her time as dance captain of the legendary Radio City Music Hall Ballet Company, and how she became President of “The Showpeople’s Committee to Save Radio City Music Hall” when its demolition was announced in 1978
  • Rare videos documenting the fight to save the theater, from talk show appearances pleading to save the hall, to footage of the Landmark hearing, to an amazing publicity stunt involving armor

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Rosie — any and all questions about saving Radio City Music Hall are welcomed and encouraged!
