Science for Liberation: Omar Gowayed & Kendra Krueger

Omar Gowayed and Kendra Krueger on how activism shapes their research and why intersectional engineering will lead to a more just future.

Omar Gowayed, activist, PhD candidate in Materials Chemistry at NYU Tandon and co-chair of March for Science NYC, will be in conversation with Kendra Krueger, the founder of 4Love and Science and The Community Sensor Lab at CUNY’s Advanced Science Research Center. They will discuss their experiences as science activists and how the four zones of liberation, i.e. ideological, institutional, interpersonal and internal, can be different entry points for using science and engineering as a tool for climate and social justice.

This event is free and open to the public. Please register through Eventbrite to receive a link to the livestream on the day of the event. This event will also be recorded.

Omar Gowayed is a Ph.D. Candidate in Materials Chemistry at New York University Tandon School of Engineering, and currently serves as a co-chair of March for Science NYC. He specializes in Non-Photochemical Laser Induced Nucleation, a technique of shooting high powered lasers to induce phase changes in certain liquid materials. Although his research is with lasers, he taught a vertical farming class called Urban Food Lab in which students run sustainability and farm focused mini-projects to learn about research and design while working on an aquaponic farm. He was also a coordinator of NYU’s Science Policy and Diplomacy course.

Kendra Krueger is an intersectional scientist, educator, artist and woman of color on many edges. Raised by artists, educated as an electrical engineer and trained in anti-oppression facilitation, theater, mindfulness and permaculture. Her work and research is a convergence of these many waters. The intention of her work comes down to healing. Healing ourselves, our communities and our Earth. Her teaching and research pedagogy advocates that science can be transformative for the external and internal world if analytical and intuitive skill-sets are combined. She founded 4LoveandScience as a platform to teach transformative science at universities, in k12 schools and in community spaces/gardens throughout the country. She has also developed performative and installation based projects in collaboration with other artists. She currently runs youth and community programs at CUNY’s Advanced Science Research Center.
