Screening and Talk of “Far From the Tree” with Andrew Solomon

Acclaimed author Andrew Solomon presents an evening dedicated to diversity, families, and the power of love to overcome differences.

Based on a best-selling book by acclaimed author Andrew Solomon, the documentary “Far From the Tree” is an emotional celebration of how families deal with extreme cases of diversity, including the challenges and rewards of children who are different from what we expect. The message of the film is that there is no longer one “normal family” paradigm, and that diversity enriches the lives of parents and children even under the most unexpected circumstances.

The film challenges our pre-conceived notions about deafness, dwarfism, Down syndrome, autism, schizophrenia, multiple severe disabilities, with children who are prodigies, who become criminals, who are transgender. While each of these characteristics is potentially isolating, the experience of difference within families is universal.

Screening will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m., followed by remarks by Andrew Solomon and a reception and book signing starting at 8 p.m.

This is a joint presentation between MUSE Academy and Brooklyn Music School and will be rewarding for parents and children ages 8 and up.

Copies of the book will be supplied courtesy of Greenlight Bookstore.
