Treasury agents go undercover to penetrate a gang of Los Angeles counterfeiters in this film noir that director Anthony Mann considered his first real film. The first collaboration between Mann and great cinematographer John Alton boasts vivid location photography, mesmerizing uses of low angles and deep focus, a powerhouse cast and a stunningly lit steam bath murder scene.
