Screening & Live Event | Swoon (with Tom Kalin in Person)

Part of Indie by Design: The Films of Production Designer Thérèse DePrez

Dir. Tom Kalin. 1992, 93 mins. 35mm. With Daniel Schlachet, Craig Chester, Ron Vawter. Co-written by Kalin and Hilton Als.

A key film of the 1990s “New Queer Cinema,” Swoon dramatizes the Leopold and Loeb murder case, which was also the basis for Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope and Richard Fleischer’s Compulsion. Swoon deals directly with the protagonists’ homosexuality and their Jewishness, taboo topics in the earlier films. With a shoestring budget, DePrez and Kalin realize the period drama in beautiful black-and-white, using spare but expressive sets that allow for the incorporation of fantasy scenes.

Preceded by Geoffrey Beene 30 (Dir. Tom Kalin. 1993, 32 mins. Digital projection). Evoking the styles of German Expressionism, Jean Cocteau, and early Ingmar Bergman, this short film, commissioned for Geoffrey Beene’s 30th anniversary as a designer, features Marcia Gay Harden, Russell Wong, Claire Danes, and Viveca Lindfors.
