A Secret and Most Excellent Art: The Porcelain of Du Paquier

Presented by Meredith Chilton, Gardiner Museum, Toronto
This lecture will not be webcast live.

The theft of industrial secrets, poaching of key employees, and corporate sabotage are not limited to modern times. These less-than-ethical business practices were key components of the establishment of the Du Paquier porcelain manufactory in early eighteenth-century Vienna. Despite its disreputable origins, the manufactory produced some of the most delightful and original porcelain of its time. This lecture explores Du Paquier’s vibrant history, the distinct style of its creations, and its role in the development of early European porcelain.
