Sectarian Politics in the Gulf: From the Iraq War to the Arab Uprisings

From the invasion of Iraq to the Arab uprisings, the Shia-Sunni divide has dominated the Persian Gulf’s political landscape. What are the roots of this divide? Focusing on Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, how have domestic political institutions, the media, and clerical establishments exacerbated sectarianism? What has been the effect of external regional events, like the Iraq War, the Syrian Civil War, and the 2006 Lebanon conflict?

Frederic M. Wehrey, author of Sectarian Politics in the Gulf, is a senior associate in the Middle East program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Presentations begin at 5:30 PM, followed by a question-and-answer session at 6:00 PM and a reception from 6:30 to 7:00 PM.
