Shame: Joseph Burgo with Lisa Gornick

Feelings of embarrassment, guilt, self-consciousness, and remorse are a part of life. Rather than push them aside, psychotherapist and writer Joseph Burgo suggests we can learn from our shame by using it to explore our goals, values, and vision for our ideal selves. Absent this kind of reflection, shame may hide behind mental disorders such as social anxiety, narcissism, addiction, and masochism. In Shame, Burgo challenges widely-held views and positive psychology regarding self-esteem, using examples from his 35 years of clinical practice.

Burgo will be joined in conversation by Lisa Gornick, novelist and graduate of the doctoral program in clinical psychology at Yale and the psychoanalytic training program at Columbia, where she is on the voluntary faculty.
