Shine: The Students of Parkland, Florida

End your week by experiencing the magic of Shabbat in our historic sanctuary — with fascinating guests and an extended Oneg Shabbat reception with live music.  Whether Temple Emanu-El is your regular Friday night destination or you are a first-timer, please join our community.

Even as the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School struggled to make sense of the Valentine’s Day shooting on their campus in Parkland, Florida, their agony morphed into action, a search for light in the darkness.

They faced down politicians on national television and brought viewers to tears with their song of hope. They excited 800,000 people to march on Washington for an end to gun violence, launched a youth voter registration campaign and raised their voices in grief and determination through music they wrote themselves.

Temple Emanu-El is honored to welcome eight of these remarkable young people to perform Shine, their tribute to the friends they lost, and to speak about their experiences and how activism, music and the arts are helping them to heal.

Students Sawyer Garrity and Andrea Peña will deliver remarks during services.

The students will perform Shine during services. A moderated conversation and extended Oneg will follow.
