New York City is increasingly a difficult place to love—and to leave. We’re inviting writers from both in-state, out of state, upstate, and downstate to tell five minute stories about the dealbreakers that have led to their departures, or their commitment to never leave (yet…!).

Jen Doll is the author of the debut young adult novel, Unclaimed Baggage and the memoir Save the Date: The Occasional Mortifications of a Serial Wedding Guest. She’s written for The Atlantic, Elle, Esquire, Glamour, GQ, New York Magazine, The New York Times Book Review, Vice, The Village Voice, The Week, and many other publications. She grew up in Alabama and lives in Brooklyn.

Pilot Viruet is a culture writer and editor. Their work has been published in The New York Times, Vulture, The A.V. Club, Cosmo, Uproxx, Men’s Journal, Esquire, Grantland, Decider, and more. They are Founder and Managing Editor of TV Hangover, and former Associate Culture Editor at VICE Media.

Talia Lavin is a “writer, extremism researcher, sensuous garlic clove. soup evangelist, (and) disciple of bofa.”

Ryan Chapman is Managing Director of Marketing and Digital Projects at BOMB Magazine. He has written for GQ.com, Electric Literature, Buzzfeed, and more. He is author of the book Conversation Sparks, adapted from his Tumblr, a two-time Webby Awards finalist.) Chapman hosts the infrequent literary trivia night “Nerd Jeopardy!” and, with Jason Diamond, a roving media party called The Mingle.

Will Hermes is a senior critic for Rolling Stone and a longtime contributor to NPR’s “All Things Considered.” His work turns up periodically in The New York Times; he has also written for Spin, Slate, Salon, The Believer, the Village Voice, City Pages, The Windy City Times, and other publications. He co-edited SPIN: 20 Years of Alternative Music (Crown/Three Rivers, 2006) with Sia Michel, and his work has appeared in the Da Capo Best Music Writing series.

Cory Nakasue is the Director of Body Intelligence, movement education and therapy, a writer, and an art facilitator and champion at Gemini Hill community farm and arts incubator.

Britney Wilson is a civil rights attorney by day, and a writer at heart. Her work has been featured in The Nation Magazine, and elsewhere. Her essay, “On New York City’s Paratransit, Fighting for Safety, Respect and Human Dignity,” ran on Longreads in September 2017, and became the basis for her This American Lifesegment, “The Longest Distance Between Two Points.”
