Skirball Talks | Insightful Brevity: Media, Fake News, and the New Generation of Informed Citizens

Panelists:

  • Moderator: Jim VandeHei, Co-founder and CEO of Axios, Former Executive Editor and Co-founder of Politico
  • Richard Plepler, Chairman and CEO, HBO
  • Andy Lack, Chairman, NBC News
  • Ben Smith, Editor-in-Chief, Buzzfeed
  • Maggie Haberman, The New York Times, White House Correspondent

In a society where the veracity of news sources has become questionable, the NYU Social Entrepreneurship Program is partnering with new media company Axios to convene a panel of distinguished individuals in the news industry to discuss the changes and opportunities in news consumption. The event will unpack and explore the issues raised by the proliferation of fake news, and the changing perceptions of the role of the media as part of the checks and balances system.

The panel will take a deep dive into how news agencies are appealing to a new generation of news consumers that puts a high value on efficiency and shareability, sometimes at the expense of truthfulness. We seek to have an honest conversation on the complexities of navigating this space in today’s tense political climate. As is the case with all our speaker series events, this event will be globally simulcast and carried by ABCnewslive.com with an in-person audience of 400-800 people. This event will be free and open to the public.

Presented as part of the new SKIRBALL TALKS series. Mondays at 6:30 during the academic terms, SKIRBALL TALKS hosts visionaries from the worlds of politics, the arts, sciences, academia, and more. Future guests include Eckhart Tolle and Marion Nestle.
