Skirball Talks: Tara Westover

The inaugural selection for NYU Reads, Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover is the story of a woman who was raised in a survivalist family in rural Idaho and whose early instruction was not only informal but, in her own words, “erratic and incomplete.” Isolated from mainstream society, she stepped foot into a classroom for the first time at age 17 and thereafter embarked on a quest for knowledge that eventually led her to Cambridge University, where she earned a Ph.D. in history.

Published by Random House in 2018, Educated is Tara Westover’s first book and has spent over 75 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list. A finalist for the PEN/Jean Stein Award, as well as for both the Autobiography Award and the Leonard Award from the National Book Critics Circle, it also made both President Barack Obama’s Favorite Books of the Year list and Bill Gates’s Holiday Reading List.

Tara Westover will discuss her journey and her memoir with Katherine E. Fleming, Provost of New York University.

Skirball Talks hosts visionaries from the worlds of politics, the arts, sciences, academia, and more. This event is free and open to the public.
