Slacking: An Evening with Author Adam Kissel

Spend an evening with the National Association of Scholars and Encounter Books to celebrate Adam Kissel's new book Slacking: A Guide to Ivy League Miseducation.

In this newly released book, Adam, along with Rachel Alexander Cambre and Madison Marino Doan, ask the question, "Can one still get a well-rounded, meaningful education at America's Ivy Leagues?" With courses like "Queer Girlhood," "Beyoncé Nation," and "Intersectional Disability Studies" at Cornell, or "Pop Sapphism" and "Comparative Settler Geographies" at Yale, it may seem that the answer is "no". Every chapter concludes with two course lists, both of which meet the school’s general education requirements. One displays the worst collection of courses that an inveterate “slacker” could take to skate through the requirements for entertainment, reinforcement of political biases, and narrow specialization. The other lists the best choice of courses a dedicated striver could take to acquire a well-rounded, content-rich liberal education.

The evening will be a time to hear from Adam Kissel and coauthor Madison Marino Doan about the book, as well as a few words from Peter W. Wood and Encounter Books' President, Roger Kimball, followed by a reception.
