Slapstick Divas

Everyone familiar with silent film comedy knows Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Laurel & Hardy. But what about Ethel Teare, Cissy Fitzgerald, Dot Farley, Dorothy Devore, Madge Kennedy, Merta Sterling, Snooky the Human-Zee, and cover girl Alice Howell? In America and abroad, the early cinema was full of beloved funny ladies, though many are relatively unknown today.

Author Steve Massa discusses the legacy of women in silent film. Massa is the author of Slapstick Comedy: The Women of Silent Comedy and a recent book on the films of Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle.

This program is presented by The National Arts Club.
