Slide Talk: “How to Psychoanalyze a Bunny”

In what Alison Bechdel called a “hilarious and terrifying” riff on the work of the child psychoanalysts Melanie Klein and D.W. Winnicott, the stars are Melanin Klein, a small black sheep who adores talking about ta-tas and widdlers, plus her three kids – a bitter kitten named Melittle Klein, a happy, destructive bunny called Little Hans, and Squiggle Piggle, a pig whose tail expresses pictures when pulled.

In the Floyd Archives, hailed as “smart, droll, original” by the New York Times, has just been reissued. Lightly based on Freud’s famous case histories – the Wolf Man, the Rat Man, Dora and Little Hans – this wildly inventive comic features a bird analyst named Dr. Floyd, a passive-aggressive, cross-dressing wolf with identity issues, an obsessive-compulsive rat, a depressed lamb, and a paranoid bunny.

Sarah Boxer, a writer of non-fiction and graphic fiction, is also a journalist. She writes for The Atlantic,The New York Review of Books, Photograph, The Comics Journal, and The New York Times Book ReviewHer essays can be found in numerous anthologies including The Peanuts Papers, Rereading America, You Are Here: NYC: Mapping the Soul of the City, and Best American Comics Criticism. She is now working on a series of Shakespearean tragic-comics (with animals) including Hamlet: Prince of Pigs and Anchovius Caesar: The Decomposition of a Romaine Salad.
