Social Movements and Democracy

Social movements are collective efforts aimed at changing institutions, shifting public opinion, and/or transforming personal and group behavior. This course discusses the meaning of social movements and the several ways in which social movements can affect the social, political, and cultural landscape. What are the links between social movements and democracy? Do social movements make democracy more participatory?

Nara Roberta Silva earned her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Sociology from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil. She has been a visiting scholar at the CUNY Graduate Center and currently teaches at Lehman College – CUNY. Nara is also an academic advisor and writer at the Brazilian Foundation, where she assists Brazilian-background students to navigate the U.S. educational environment.

In collaboration with Prospect Park Alliance, Brooklyn Public Library presents University Open Air, a free, three-week series of classes beginning Tuesday, June 11th in Prospect Park’s former Rose Garden.
