Sound and NYC: Exploring Silence in the City

Composer/conductor/professor Whitney George and percussionist Joe Tucker of The Curiosity Cabinet new music ensemble, present an evening of percussion music of the 20th century. Composers at the turn of the industrial era, started to incorporate sounds of the budding urban jungle into their pallet of instrumental timbres and musical creation at large.

This unique Olio/demonstration combines the performance of works by modern, contemporary voices such as Steve Reich, David Lang, and John Cage with a look into the historical importance of these works, and how the surrounding environment of man-made sounds of the 20th century have forever changed the way we approach composing for percussion.

Teacher: Whitney George

George holds an undergraduate degree from the California Institute of the Arts, a masters degree from Brooklyn College Conservatory, and is currently continuing her studies as a PhD candidate at the CUNY Grad Center. In addition to her composing and conducting, George teaches at Brooklyn College, works at the Hitchcock Institute of American Studies and is the Managing Director for New York’s AME.
