Sound the Alarm!

Explore the History and Legacy of New York City’s Firefighters in a Trolley Tour at Green-Wood

Firefighting was an exceptionally dangerous occupation in 19th-century New York City. There were little to no fire safety regulations, and up until 1865 Brooklyn’s fire companies were manned by volunteers.

Join Jeff Richman, Green-Wood’s historian, for a tour to uncover the stories of these courageous firefighters and their sacrifices. Stops along the trolley tour include the elaborate Firemen’s Monument (1848) that honors the death of thirty men who died in the line of duty, the symbolic brownstone fire hydrants that mark the lot of the infamous Americus 6 Fire Company (Boss Tweed was its founder), as well as first responders who died in the 9/11 attacks.

WHERE: Green-Wood (25th Street at 5th Avenue, Brooklyn) – Meet inside the Main Gate.

Reservations are recommended. If the event is not sold out, walk-ups will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis.
