Sports Author Talk: Plie Ball! Baseball Meets Dance on Stage and Screen

Grand Central Library hosts Jeffrey M. Katz to dicscuss his book, Plie Ball! Baseball Meets Dance on Stage and Screen!

From the vaudeville gyrations of New York Giants star pitchers Rube Marquard and Christy Mathewson, to Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra as hoofing infielders in Take Me Out to the Ball Game, to the stage and screen versions of Damn Yankees, the connection between baseball and dance is an intimate, perhaps surprising one.

Covering more than a century of dancing ballplayers and baseball-inspired dance, this entertaining talk will examine the connection in film and television, in theatrical productions and in choreography created for some of the greatest dancers and dance companies in the world.

Jeff Katz was born and raised in New York City and is the son of a former Major League Baseball scout. His articles and reviews have appeared in a variety of publications, including Columbia: The Magazine of Northwest History, Marketing Library Services, Public Libraries, and School Library Journal. His essay, “How Do You Solve a Problem Like the Yankees?,” will be featured in the forthcoming McFarland anthology, The New York Yankees in Popular Culture (edited by David Krell, Spring 2019). Jeff currently works with teens, young adults, and people with disabilities at the New York Public Library and will be a presenter at the upcoming 2019 Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture, held at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
