“St. Helena: the Story of Napoleon’s Exile”
with Arthur H. Groten, M.D

Where do you put a man who is so shrewd, cunning and bold that he could declare himself “Emperor of France?” Why not the 10 by 5 mile island of St. Helena? Located in the South Atlantic Ocean it’s isolation was a perfect place for the former Emperor of France, his wife, a few friends and a host of British guards. So how do you handle the mail from his island? Any letter could contain the seeds of an escape plot similar to Elba? Scholar and well know author, Arthur Groten, M.D. will share his research and fascinating collection.
His interest in St. Helena was piqued by purchasing a general collection of St. Helena from his good friend, Phoebe Macgillivary. He soon decided that he would concentrate on her postal history. The collection had a nice group of early covers and he began acquiring more. Since most everyone associates St. Helena with Napoleon’s exile, that seemed a reasonable starting point. This talk is about how the mail was handled on St. Helena during his exile, 1815-1821. Much of the material is unique.
