Start a Revolution Film Series: Before Stonewall (1985)

Traces the development of the homosexual community from the social experimentation of the Roaring Twenties, the persecutions of the McCarthy era, and the development of the gay rights movement. Uses filmed recollections and a wealth of rare archival material both from the mass media’s portrayal of homosexuality and from the gay community’s own documentation. Features author/poet Audre Lord, historian Martin Duberman, gay activist Barbara Gittings, poet Allen Ginsberg and others.
