Stitching a New Identity: Fashion in Israel’s Nation Building

Enjoy a presentation investigating the relationship between fashion, national identity, and diplomacy, using the state of Israel from its inception in the 1940s through the present day as a case study. With vibrant illustrations, photographs, and never-before-seen archival materials, we will explore key moments, designers, and political figures who shaped Israel’s foreign relations and — even more importantly — defined what it means to be Israeli. Keren Ben-Horin is a fashion historian and curator who has curated several fashion exhibitions in New York and Israel and co-authored the fashion history survey She’s Got Legs: A History of Hemlines and Fashion. Keren is the editor of the book The Sweater: A History. She is also a PhD Candidate in History at NYU. The talk will be followed by a presentation of HÍDAS, by designer Michal Hidas. Under the title “Bridging”, Hidas created two collections in collaboration with a Palestinian architect from Gaza. Unable to meet in person, the two established a creative partnership combining his freeform drawings and her unique textile design.

Join Michal and Keren for an evening exploring fashion, identity, and social change! Israeli fashion is highly encouraged.

In collaboration with the Israel Office of Cultural Affairs.
