Student Debt and the Decline of State Funding in NYC

After World War II, federal and state funding to public higher education increased dramatically. But since the 1970’s governments have been investing less, and student debt has been steadily rising. The panel will explore this history and current efforts to restore the public commitment.

Stephen Brier (Graduate Center, CUNY), author of the newly published Austerity Blues: Fighting for the Soul of Public Higher Education, will provide historical background. Deborah J. Glick, chair of the New York State Assembly’s Committee on Higher Education, will discuss current legislative initiatives. Thomas L. Harnisch, Director of State Relations and Policy Analysis at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, will provide a national perspective. Stephanie Saul of the New York Times will moderate.
