Sufganiyot and Churros: A Sweet Mexican Hanukkah with Fany Gerson

The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a commemoration of two miraculous events: an unlikely military victory and a menorah (candelabrum) that burned for eight days despite having only enough oil to last one night. It is this oil that is celebrated and symbolized in the foods eaten during Hanukkah, such as crispy potato pancakes and sweet jelly doughnuts, commonly referred to by their Hebrew name, sufganiyot.

On Wednesday, December 9th, join MOFAD and chef Fany Gerson, author of My Sweet Mexico and founder of La Newyorkina and Fan-Fan Doughnuts for a sweet celebration. Raised in Mexico City by Ashkenazi Jews, Fany will share the culinary connections between her Mexican and Eastern European heritage, and teach us how to make strawberry jelly doughnuts.

Fany will also share her experience of opening her newest venture, Fan-Fan Doughnuts, in the middle of a pandemic.

Tickets include the option to purchase a signed copy of My Sweet Mexico by Fany Gerson.

Recipes and ingredients for Fany’s strawberry jelly doughnuts will be emailed to ticket holders in advance of the event.
