A book club discussion of Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey — winner of the 2023 British Fantasy Award for Best Horror Novel and named one of the best horror novels of 2022 by Vulture, NPR, and Paste Magazine.
When Vera's estranged, dying mother calls her home, she obeys — back to the Crowder House, the house her father built, and the bodies he buried beneath it. Part gothic thriller, part ghost story, part psychological horror, the novel weaves true crime dread with deeply unsettling family dynamics. Complicating everything: Vera loved her father. Copies available to borrow at various NYPL locations.
SUMMER SCARES is a reading program from The Horror Writers Association (HWA), in partnership with Book Riot, Booklist, NoveList, and iREAD, provides libraries and schools with an annual list of recommended horror titles for adult, young adult, and middle grade readers. It helps start conversations extending beyond the selected titles and promotes life-long learning. New York Times best-selling author Jennifer McMahon and a committee of six library workers, led by HWA Library Committee Co-Chairs Becky Spratford and Konrad Stump, have selected three titles in each reading level.
