Summer Scares Book Discussion: The Buffalo Hunter Hunter

The Roosevelt Island Library hosts a book discussion of The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones — a New York Times bestseller and Bram Stoker Award winner described by NPR as a "horror masterpiece."

A diary written in 1912 by a Lutheran pastor is discovered within a wall. What it unveils is a slow massacre, a chain of events that go back to 217 Blackfeet dead in the snow. Told through transcribed confessional interviews with a Blackfeet man named Good Stab — who finds himself transformed into a vampiric creature in the wake of a brutal massacre — the novel weaves together Indigenous history, horror, and revenge. Jones traces Good Stab's extraordinary life through a variety of names — Weasel Plume, Takes No Scalps, The Fullblood — from the 19th century to the present.
