Sunday Meeting | Joe Chuman: The Radical Martin Luther King We Do Not Know

What most people don’t know about Martin Luther King, Jr. is that beyond his militant critique of racism and white supremacy, he powerfully condemned American militarism, imperialism, and materialism, and had a class analysis of the evils of capitalism. Though he did not often proclaim it publicly, King was an identified democratic socialist. Few Americans knew of this side of King and still don’t. But the FBI assuredly did, and it was for no small reason that J. Edgar Hoover referred to him as “the most dangerous man in America.”

But, while King sustained a severe criticism of the evils of American society, he was by no means anti-American. In these times, we can learn from Martin Luther King, Jr. the need for dissent in the service of a transformative vision for our society.

Our shared charity is Project Harmony, a grassroots, non-profit, volunteer organization devoted to the wellbeing and sustainability of our total environment, active in community revitalization since 1985.
