Sunday Platform | Prof. Arthur Leonard: Employee Rights in The Supreme Court, 2018 Edition

The Labor Day Program focuses on two recent Supreme Court decisions: (1) Epic Systems v. Lewis, which narrowed the scope of protected concerted employee action under the National Labor Relations Act, and (2) Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which held unconstitutional requiring union-represented public employees to provide financial support for the union’s representative activities. We will also look at a question the Court may take up in the upcoming term: Whether the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination against people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Professor Leonard is the Robert F. Wagner Professor of Labor and Employment Law – NYU Law School, and a member of NYLS faculty since 1982. He is founder and first president of the LGBT Bar Association of Greater NY. Born in Brooklyn, he was educated at Cornell (Industrial and Labor Relations School) and Harvard Law. He’s Editor of LGBT Law Notes since 1980 and Contributing editor for Gay City News.
