Sung Hwan Kim: Love Before Bond

Sung Hwan Kim is a contemporary artist born in Seul, South Korea, in 1975, he lives and works in New York, USA. He worked for four years as a fellow at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in the Netherlands, and making his passion for music a proper added value to his performing art. So the artist concretely integrates his performances playing different characters: musician, artist, editor, performer, narrator, poet, and so on. In his practice, Sung Hwan Kim integrates video and performance art, taking on the role of director, editor, performer, composer, narrator and poet. By approaching his own work from all production angles, his pieces are infused with his own highly subjective vision. His videos and performances seldom tell a linear story. His dream-like films depart from a straight forward story, the scenes shift almost illogically with strong cuts, whilst maintaining an overall narrative and aesthetic coherence.

Sung Hwan Kim received his BA in Mathematics from Williams College and an MA in Visual Studies from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also studied at Seoul National University in Seoul Korea form 1995-96 within the Architectural and Engineering Program. Selected exhibitions, performances and radio plays include Center for Contemporary Art, Kitakyushu, Japan (2016); Asia Cultural Center, Gwangju, South Korea (2015); MoMA PS1, New York, NY (2015); Kunsthaus Bregenz, Bregenz, Austria (2015) and Tate Modern, London, UK (2012). Kim was a guest of the DAAD Artist in Berlin program in 2015 amongst other prestigious international residencies.

The Intra-Disciplinary Seminar (IDS) Public Lecture Series, designed as an introduction to some of the most pressing questions driving contemporary thought and practice, consists of lectures by artists, theorists, activists, designers, writers, curators, and other practitioners involved in the arts from positions that embody an interdisciplinary approach or that imply new uses for disciplinary traditions.

This year’s series is organized along three general directions: “Open Space: Building”, where we look at the social function of architecture, and how people move through space or build physical or symbolic spaces. “Open Image: Thresholds of Form”, where we think about the practice of image making, as well as the perception and interpretation of aesthetic production. “Open Methods: The (Post-)Colonial Contemporary”, where we wonder how to theorize the present moment, with regard to its political and ethical dimensions. IDS is organized by Leslie Hewitt, assistant professor at the School of Art of The Cooper Union, and Omar Berrada the director of Dar al-Ma’mûn, a library and artists’ residency in Marrakech and an adjunct instructor at The Cooper Union.
