Surrealism and Alchemy: More Than Just a Pretty Picture

An illustrated lecture with Brian Cotnoir takes a look at the surrealist’s interest in, and connection with alchemy. Through the imagery of the surrealists and the alchemists we will explore their world-view and the role of dream and vision common to both. Amongst the artists considered tonight, particular attention will be given to Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington, the contemporary artist and filmmaker Jan Švankmajer, and the theoretical writings of Andre Breton in an attempt to uncover the deeper inner connections between alchemy and surrealism.

Brian Cotnoir is an alchemist, artist and award-winning filmmaker. Author of The Weiser Concise Guide to Alchemy, the Emerald Tablet, and Alchemical Meditations, he is currently writing his next book, Alchemy: The Poetry of Matter. He has presented seminars and workshops around the world on various aspects of the art.
