Symposium: Tarot Renaissance Symbols Modern Visions

An afternoon symposium at the Morgan Library exploring the making of tarot cards, from fifteenth-century Milanese court commissions to contemporary artistic practice.

The first session examines the elaborate material techniques used to create Renaissance tarot cards for the Dukes of Milan, with conservators Frank Trujillo, Lydia Aikenhead, and Marie-France Lemay detailing their findings alongside conservation scientist Elena Basso on how cutting-edge technology confirms the materials used. Curator Joshua O'Driscoll provides an art historical overview of the cards' precedents.

The second session features a conversation between curator Claire Gilman and artist Kim Krans on a contemporary artist's approach to creating tarot art.
