The Manhattan Districts 1/2/5 Garage is located at the corner of Spring Street and West Street, overlooking the Hudson River. It will house three district garages for the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY), with over 150 sanitation vehicles, personnel facilities for each district, and centralized vehicular wash, fueling and repair facilities.

Dattner Architects led a design team that included WXY Architecture + Urban Design, Greeley & Hansen and Klein & Hoffman among others, working closely with DSNY to shepherd the project through a series of public presentations agency requirements and community approvals responding to concerns about the garage and it’s bulk, height, and appearance. The resulting design – currently under construction – incorporates several sustainable design innovations including a louvered double-skin façade.

The panel will address the role that architects, community groups and city agencies play in shaping the infrastructure of the city.
